The first thing we saw as we approached one of the newest restaurants in Swindon was a great deal and we left having just eaten one.

“Bottomless south Indian breakfast £9.99” read the advert on Biryani Lounge - where we were going for dinner so we knew then we’d have to return.

It was quiet inside, like everywhere else in Swindon town centre on a wet Sunday evening. But it was a lot brighter. Biryani Lounge promises a “unique sensory experience” with its “mouthwatering and authentic” foodBiryani Lounge promises a “unique sensory experience” with its “mouthwatering and authentic” food (Image: Newsquest)

Biryani Lounge is lit better than a football pitch and the first thing you see is a metal cage you might get around an Astro pitch, which adds an odd locker room feel.

It opened at the former Stax and Snax takeaway in Regent Street on Friday, October 4, and promised a “unique sensory experience” with its “mouthwatering and authentic” food. The main downside was the atmosphere with its odd cage decor and bright lightsThe main downside was the atmosphere with its odd cage decor and bright lights (Image: The Biryani Lounge)

Biryani is a dish of rice, vegetables and meat, the best of which are meant to be from the city of Hyderabad in mid-India.

The biryani was indeed unlike anything I had tasted before. Tart and salty it came with a thin mild gravy and yoghurt to pour on top.(Image: Newsquest)

We had the most buttery garlic naan I can remember, while my friend got plain rice and a veg korma.

There was also mango lassi, dal makhani, incredibly creamy with black beans, and a curry of peas and aubergine.(Image: The Biryani Lounge)

My favourite of these was the last, but I must admit all tasted quite similar - similarly delicious, fortunately, with a rich deep flavour.

But even better is the fact that I enjoyed this for days later: We massively over-ordered, and I was lucky enough to be eating leftovers for the next three days. We spent around £45 in total with the mains costing around £8 and the carbs £3. (Image: The Biryani Lounge)

One of the mains would have been enough each, allowing you to eat for just over £10. It was the cheapest meal out I have had in a long while and as we sat there at the Lounge filled up with happy families who had already discovered the delicious affordable food.(Image: Newsquest)

Biryani Lounge is not fancy - I would not take a date here - but it is doing something right, this being its second branch after Reading.

It was down-to-earth, delicious and good value and I left feeling happily full and weighed down with leftovers.

It may not be for everyone but I like a no-frills place with simply good food, and will be returning to try that bottomless breakfast…
