A man has been arrested following a racially aggravated assault at a West Swindon shopping centre.

A 23-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of common assault, GBH, possessing an offensive weapon in a public place and a section 4A public order offence on Tuesday, November 26.

Three people were assaulted in the incident, including a police officer, who was bitten.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said; "The victim, a man in his 20s, was racially abused and hit with a bike seat by another man near a bike rack on the left side of Asda at around 5.25pm.

"They moved to the main entrance where a third man, aged in his 30s, saw them fighting and tried to separate the pair.

"The instigator has then repeatedly hit the third man over the head with a bike seat, leaving him with serious injuries which required hospital treatment.

"During the arrest, the suspect bit a police officer and was further arrested for common assault causing actual bodily harm.

"We are appealing for witnesses who were in the area between 5.20pm and 5.45pm. If you saw what happened, please call 101 quoting crime reference 54240139853."

A member of the public described the scene after the incident took place on social media.

They said: "Police everywhere, bloody everywhere, ripped clothes, smashed up phones."
