New council-owned bungalows are under construction on two Swindon streets.

Three three-bedroom homes on Ashley Close in Walcot will be available for tenants to move into in two months, while the parking area and first timber frame of eight two-bedroom homes on Ventnor Close in Moredon have been completed.

This will help address a shortage of adaptable housing in Swindon, featuring level access, off-road parking, fully adapted wet rooms, and wheelchair-friendly layouts to allow residents to live independently and comfortably in their community.

Energy-saving technology like air source heat pumps, solar panels, and MVHR systems will help residents save money on their bills while reducing their environmental impact.

Cllr Janine Howarth, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet member for housing, said: “The work to build new fully-adapted bungalows in Moredon and Walcot is about creating homes that empower residents to live fully and independently.

“These bungalows are designed with the purpose to meet not only the physical needs of those with disabilities or requiring live-in care but also to enrich their quality of life within our community.

“With sustainable technologies like solar panels and advanced ventilation, we’re also tackling environmental goals head-on, making these homes as kind to the planet as they are to the residents.

“This project embodies our vision for a Fairer, Better and Greener Swindon, where everyone has the foundation to thrive, and I can’t wait to see these homes become a vital part of our neighbourhoods in the next year.”
