Police caught several drivers going above the speed limit on a Swindon road that has seen fatal traffic accidents.

Akers Way's speed limit was lowered from 40mph to 30mph after a tragic crash in September 1991, when five children lost their lives.

A driver lost control of his car and reached speeds of more than 90mph just before hitting Paula Barnes, 15, Belinda Brown, 19, Paul Carr, 16, Sheree Lear, eight, and seven-year-old Ian Lilley.

The motorist - 24-year-old Shaun Gooch of Penhill - received a five-year jail sentence for causing death by reckless driving.

More recently, 14-year-old Harry Parker died after being hit by a car while using the Akers Way crossing near Nova Hreod Academy on November 25.

But drivers are still being careless and dangerous on the road.

PC Smith from Swindon Response Team One carried out speed checks on Monday and spotted motorists going at speeds of 39mph and 44mph.

A Wiltshire Police spokesman said: "This manner of driving is completely unacceptable, especially near to a school.

"Relevant words of advice and Traffic Offence Reports were issued.

"If you see any anti-social driving or you suspect drivers are driving under the influence of alcohol, please call 101 - or 999 in an emergency."
