A CONTROVERSIAL road closure is set to cause more disruption for Swindon motorists this week.

People living in Wroughton were up in arms when a busy route along Marlborough Road was closed for a three-month period lasting until April because of the impact it would have, particularly on schoolchildren.

But in the latest update provided to Swindon Borough Council from the contractor carrying out the work, Conlon Ltd, it was revealed that the closure would now be affecting a longer section of Marlborough Road - just as pupils return to school after the half-term break.

The council posted onto Facebook: "From Monday (February 28), the current road closure will change and no traffic will be allowed to access Marlborough Road from the Three Tuns Roundabout until early April.

"This will mean that all traffic, including residents and workers, will have to use Brimble Hill to access their driveways and the construction site until the road is reopened.

"Those residents directly affected by the closure will be informed by letter of any changes to these arrangements."

But there was some good news as the update also confirmed that the contractors were on track to finish by April as initially proposed.

The Pitchens, Bakers Road and Greens Lane, which have been closed since work began, will remain shut.

Work also continues to create the new footpath on the east side of Marlborough Road and kerbs for the new traffic island on the west side have been installed.

Existing trenches have been backfilled, ready for the traffic changeover.

The council added: "Conlon, Instalcom and their partners have a legal right to undertake these works but we understand the inconvenience to local residents.

"Despite the Council not conducting this work, we have been working with the contractors and developers to provide regular updates as well as alternative travel routes and help where needed."
