The leader of Wiltshire Council says the county is “ready to help” those who need a safe home following the Taliban takeover of Kabul.

Richard Clewer said: “We are already looking to provide homes for at least two families and there may be more in due course.”

A large number of our online comments expressed anger at the news, while others urged compassion.

Barbara Moxey: Most of my grandchildren live in privately owned rental homes. They are expensive and they have been told no chance of social housing. While I feel so sorry for these people I also feel sorry for my family they have lived in our town with no chance of being housed by Wiltshire Council.

Mark Byatt: Affordable housing for the British tax payer is nowhere to be seen.

Trish Daly: Humanity and compassion are a rare commodity these days. There are charities up and down this country with millions in assets and in the bank, most homeless prefer to be out of the system. Countless reasons they prefer to stay that way. Afghan is of our politicians making, we need to be better humans.

Clare Ashworth: What about our homeless British people that have just been forgotten about let more foreigners in and give them everything. Yeah, well done.

Lucy Jiwa: Two. I don’t know what else to say. Two. Well done Wiltshire. Sigh.

Katherine Christine Killick: There are many countries around the world with much larger land mass than our tiny island to accommodate refugees. The UK is struggling to accommodate its already large homeless population as it is. Schools and surgeries are full to bursting and we are constantly building over our countryside. The UK cannot keep taking in refugees, we simply do not have the land mass or facilities to do so. There is a serious housing crisis in this country and people are already struggling for doctors appointments, school placements etc. There has to be other options for these people...

Rob Cook: Perhaps they should go to the USA. They created this current mess.

Vicky Rowcliffe-smith: Let’s hope that we never find ourselves in the same boat and people. Turn us away hey.

Vicky Munt: Should house the ones in our own country first. Some have been on the housing list for years 😡 maybe use community centres and buildings that are not in use. They will be safe and wouldn’t care where they are staying as long as they are away from the taliban.

He Len: Click on it, read it before you go off on ‘what about our needy?’ Two families connected to the military are being helped - two. If they send them back with nothing the savings won’t be spent on ‘our needy’ - just another royal yacht or something.

Emily Hards: Wow… a whole two… one of the least populated counties in the country.

Nas Mitch: Personally think they’d be better off taking their chances with the Taliban than the ignorant Wiltshire bigots, so beautifully demonstrated by the cesspit that is the comments section of any Wiltshire news page. Second thoughts can we swap “our” bigots for refugees. I suspect they’d fit right in with the intolerant Taliban.

Back by popular demand

Meanwhile, there was joy at the news that popular restaurateur Haroom Ahmed would be making welcome return to the Indian Tandoori in Trowbridge he first set up in 1978.

Known to many as Tony, the businessman handed over the Mogul Tandoori in Mortimer Street to a family member to continue the Indian restaurant and takeaway business.

But now, following popular demand, he is returning to the business he loved to run.

Nick Tucker: That is absolute the best news - welcome back Tony.

Paul Moran: Excellent news! My favourite takeaway…. Life is good again.

Diane Palmer: Can’t wait missed him so much the Mogul was not the same when he left

Mark Saunders: Good now I can go back as when he owned it it was the best Indian restaurant in Trowbridge. I’m wrong, it’s not the best in Trowbridge, it’s the best in Wiltshire.

Leanne Palmer: The best news I’ve heard in ages!

Mark Garland: I hope the restaurant gets completely renovated. Last time I ate there it was a filthy mess. I took family and was embarrassed. On a positive note the food was tasty and generous portions.

Carly Andrews: Yesss, we can finally get Indian again!
