The state of the road surface at a major junction in central Swindon has sparked a petition calling for it to be fixed.

Rodbourne Cheney councillor Jim Grant and his fellow members of the Labour party visited at the St Mary’s Church roundabout at the junction of Akers Way, Beech Avenue and Vicarage Road, bordering Moredon, Cheney Manor and Pinehurst.

They were asking people to sign a petition to have the surface of the highway going round the island and into the feeder roads included on Swindon Borough Council’s list for repairs as a priority.

The petition says: “We draw the attention of Swindon Borough Council to the state of the road surface at St Mary’s roundabout, Rodbourne Cheney.

“The road surface has been in need of repair for a number of years and its condition has caused damaged to numerous vehicles during that time.

"We, therefore, call upon Swindon Borough Council to urgently resurface the road to prevent any further damage to vehicles in the future.”

Leader of the Labour group Coun Grant was there collecting signatures.

He said: “This is a major route for people coming down from North Swindon to Cheney Manor and to Rodbourne, and we’ve had plenty of complaints from people who have damaged their vehicles here.

“The surface is very potholed and rough and it hasn’t been repaired for ages, and we’d like to get it put on the list as a priority.”

Coun Grant said he and fellow campaigners had a good response.

There will also be a petition hosted on the council’s website.

The surface of Akers Way to the east of the junction was repaired and improved in 2018, but others agree the neighbouring roads and the roundabout itself are in need of work.

Wayne Ellis said: “The pot holes all around St Mary’s roundabout and down Vicarage Road towards Cheney are absolutely shocking.”

Coun Grant hopes to get the 350 signatures necessary to be able to spark a debate on the issue at a full meeting of the borough council.
