A protected bird of prey was shot down near Swindon, prompting a police investigation.

A member of the public alerted officers to a Red Kite which was found dead in a rural location south of Purton at around 5pm on February 4.

The protected bird is believed to have been shot down and then left on the ground.

But the Red Kite is a protected species which is listed under Schedule 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act, making it a criminal offence to shoot one.

Officers investigating the crime are now appealing for anyone who may have information about this incident to get in touch.

"We are appealing for information after a protected bird of prey was found dead in a rural location, Greenhills to the south of Purton," said a spokesperson for Wiltshire Police.

"We would like to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time or who may have dash cam footage taken from the area.
