An assault believed to have taken place in front of many witnesses has led to the arrest of a man. 

Two people in their 30s were attacked following a verbal altercation that took place in New Bridge Square, Swindon on Saturday July 9 near to the Octagon Restaurant. 

A man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion and released on bail pending further enquiries from the police.

Officers are now appealing for witnesses to come forward, as they believe many people saw what happened. 

A spokesperson said: "We would urgently like to hear from these people as they may have significant information."

PC Katey Baker added: “This assault happened in a busy area of Swindon where foot traffic is normally very high.

"I would really like to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time who saw the assault, or anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious in or around the area.

"We take reports of this nature seriously, and one man has been arrested in connection with the incident."
