Wrong Shoes Theatre Company's Little Prince Christmas show fulfills a unique gap in entertainment for Swindon families.
While the pantomime at the Wyvern is great, it might be a little too much and a little too long for families with younger children - which is where The Little Prince comes in.
The retelling of the story of a kind little prince trying to make friends by visiting different planets and meeting a flower, a fox, and a pilot, takes place in the intimate and small setting of the Showbox Theatre inside the Health Hydro, its small-scale, quiet, calm, and quite lovely.
There's a small cast of two, plus a bespoke puppet who represents the titular Little Prince. It's a simple thing but the magic of theatre really does make the tiny object come to life as a real person.
There were several moments of audience interaction between the prince and the excited young children in the audience, and at one point the Prince found himself stranded on a member of the audience's shoulder, who had to walk him back onto the stage and onto a mountain, which caused fits of giggles.
It's a real treat and at 45 minutes it is the perfect first theatre experience for young children who may find the 2-hours of a traditional panto a bit too much.
